Abstract
Klett’s new backward inversion algorithm is used to derive optical extinction coefficient profiles from lidar returns from cloudy and foggy atmospheres. Possible influences of multiple scattering and spatially varying backscatter/extinction ratios are discussed, and a series of examples, especially showing the structure of cloud boundaries, are presented.
