Optical fibers with very fine layered dielectrics

Abstract

A novel optical fiber configuration which has a very fine layered structure as the core and/or the cladding material is proposed and analyzed. A multilayered structure, in which the layer thickness is much smaller than the wavelength but larger than the atomic size, shows higher birefringence than the conventional form birefringence. The index of refraction for the quasiplane waves with the electric field perpendicular to the layer surface is decreased from the averaged index n0 due to the index modulation by n1 with the period Λ at the wavelength λ0 as

Δnn0=(λ0Λ)4(n1n0)20.
This structure has potentially a very high birefringence, and moreover it can have an arbitrary effective-index distribution by modulating the period. This layered structure can also be utilized for optical waveguide devices.
