Abstract

The Lorentz-Lorenz corrections were employed to calculate the optical constants for stratospheric aerosols. The stratospheric aerosol effects on the VAS determination of SST were studied by using Mie theory radiative transfer calculations. The largest effect of El Chichon volcanic aerosols on VAS SST estimates results in a 1 K cold bias in the 11 μm window channel. The use of a linear combination of two or three spectrally independent window channels allows one to eliminate most of the atmospheric gas and stratospheric aerosol attenuation effects. Accounting for instrumental noise, the best results are obtained through a combination of channels 8 (11 μm), 12 (4.0 μm), and 5 (13.3 μm), If only two channels are to be used, channels 8 and 12 are optimum for nighttime conditions, while channels 8 and 7 (12.6 μm) or channels 8 and 5 can be used for daytime conditions if reflected solar radiation contaminates the observations in channel 12.
