Abstract
A coherent heterodyne detector has a dynamic range of up to fifteen decades, as well as shot-noise-limited sensitivity. Applications of coherent heterodyne radiometry that exploit the extraordinary dynamic range include the calibration of optical filters and the measurement of scattered light from surfaces and materials.
