Abstract

This brief biography is intended mainly to depict the family life and background of the fourth Lord Rayleigh. His scientific career has been admirably described by Sir Alfred Egerton in his Royal Society Obituary [ Obit. Notices of Fellows of Roy. Soc. London 6, 503 ( 1949)].
