Abstract
The research of Lord Rayleigh pertaining to optics is summarized. Major topics discussed are his research on active nitrogen (the Lewis-Rayleigh afterglow), and luminous glows in other gases and vapors; his identification of ozone in the earth’s atmosphere; and his pioneering work on the night airglow and auroral phenomena.
