A Visual Device for the Rapid Focusing and Testing of Optical Systems

Abstract

The customary methods for focusing spectrographs and telescopes (or other image-forming systems) are tedious, and become inconvenient when refocusing must be done frequently. A simple visual parallactic focuser was made at Sacramento Peak. It has proved to be very quick and accurate in use. Since it determines the focal position for rays from a selected zone in the aperture, it can be readily adapted for zonal testing of an optical system. The parallactic tester is comparable in accuracy and much more convenient to use than the Hartmann test, which gives the same Information by photographic methods.
