Abstract

Optical damage thresholds at λ = 2.94 μm have been investigated in one single-mode (11-μm core, 125-μm cladding) and five multimode fluoride glass fibers. (These five fibers consist of three conventional ones, 70-μm core, 140-μm cladding, 150-μm core, 200-μm cladding, and 200-μm core, 250-μm cladding, and two low-attenuation ones, 200-μm core, 250-μm cladding, and 350-μm core, 400-μm cladding.) The induced surface damage is discussed by means of electron microscopic analysis. Power limits for safe transmission are presented.
