Abstract

A pulsed ruby laser coupled to a diffraction-limited microscope has been developed for application to bio-optical research. Theoretical limitations on maximum energy density and minimum spot size are indicated and practical compromises are discussed. Small samples of organic and inorganic materials have been irradiated and vaporized. Single living cells have been exposed to radiation spots of 1 μ to 2 μ in diameter and destroyed at energy densities of about 102J/mm2.
