Fourier transform spectroscopy…

Abstract

Fourier transform spectroscopy is widely practiced in the far infrared; it was first applied to magnetooptics by Michelson. He observed that the Zeeman effect was a splitting—rather than just a broadening—of the Na atomic line [Astrophys. J. 7, 131 (1898)]. The excerpt from LIGHT WAVES AND THEIR USES by A. A. Michelson (University of Chicago Press, 1902) reproduced here tells part of this interesting story.
