Digital Holography and 3D Imaging 2023: introduction to the joint feature issue in Applied Optics and Journal of the Optical Society of America A

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The Optica Topical Meeting on Digital Holography and 3D Imaging (DH) was held 14–17 August 2023 in Boston, Massachusetts. The meeting was organized co-jointly with the Optica Imaging Congress. Feature issues based on the DH meeting series have been released by Applied Optics (AO) since 2007. Since 2017, AO and the Journal of the Optical Society of America A (JOSA A) have presented a feature issue in each journal. This feature issues includes 17 papers in AO and 9 in JOSA A. Together they cover a large range of topics, reflecting the rapidly expanding techniques and applications of digital holography and 3D imaging. The upcoming DH Conference (DH 2024) will be held from 3 to 6 June in Paestum, Italy.

Since 2007, every Optica topical meeting on Digital Holography and 3D Imaging (DH) has offered the opportunity to authors to submit their research in a feature issue of Applied Optics. AO and JOSA A began offering the feature jointly in 2017 to reflect the diversity of topics discussed during the conference.

DH’23 took place in August 2023 in Boston, Massachusetts, and was held in conjunction with the Optica Imaging Congress. It was a great success, with 117 accepted presentations running in parallel sessions over four days. The DH Topical Meeting is recognized as the world’s premier forum for science, technology, and applications of digital holography, 3D imaging, and display methods. The conference includes multiple sessions on the following:

  • • Holographic Optical Elements and Applications
  • • Computer Generated Holograms and Metasurface Holograms
  • • Digital Holographic Techniques for Bio-imaging
  • • Holographic Display and Imaging Systems
  • • Phase Processing, Retrieval Techniques, and Applications
  • • Contemporary Topics in Digital Holography and 3D Imaging
  • • Applications of  Digital Holography and 3D Imaging
  • • Radiographic Imaging and Tomography (symposium)

In addition to the familiar topics usually covered by the DH conference, the 2023 incarnation also included the Radiographic Imaging and Tomography (RadIT) conference, dedicated to Radiographic Imaging and Tomography. The RadIT symposium was particularly popular, with 21 presentations. The similitude with optical diffraction and 3D imaging meant that the audience was invited to cross from one domain to the other, and to discuss techniques that can breach conventional frontiers.

The present feature issue includes many excellent contributions, of which 17 are published in AO and 9 in JOSA A. All submitted papers, including the invited papers, underwent strict peer review. Together, these articles present the most up-to-date technological developments that are currently underway in digital holography and 3D imaging. Our hope is that they will stimulate novel discoveries and applications.

The topical editors would like to thank all contributors and reviewers, without whom this feature issue would not have been possible. Finally, we wish the very best for the upcoming Digital Holography and 3D Imaging Conference DH’24, which will be held 3–6 June in Paestum, Italy, as a stand-alone conference.
