Rayleigh Scattering of Linearly Polarized Light from Optically Active Quartz

Abstract

The visual observation of optical rotation in quartz with subsequent Rayleigh scattering from crystal imperfections is reported. Observations in which the incident beam travels at an arbitrary angle with the optic axis are described and are shown to obey classical Fresnel relations. The frequency dependence of the phenomenon has also been studied.
