Rayleigh Scattering from Defects in Quartz

Abstract

The observation of right angle Rayleigh scattering from defects in quartz using an argon laser beam which is propagated at 90° to the optic axis is reported. The intensity of the scattered light varies periodically along the axis of the laser beam, which variation is resolved by viewing the scattering regions with a microscope. The visibility of the scattering pattern depends upon both the direction of viewing and the plane of polarization of the incident laser beam in relation to the optic axis. A theory of the scattering patterns for the general case of propagation at an angle θ to the optic axis of an anisotropic medium is given.
