Founded in 1895 as Peiyang University, Tianjin University (TJU) is the first university in China. Since being established in 1958, the Optical Engineering program at Tianjin University has made significant progress in education, research and society service, becoming one of the first key disciplines in 1987, and ranking among the top 3 key disciplines in the national discipline evaluation every year since. In recent years, the program has been recognized globally for achievements in education and research, particularly within the topics of terahertz, optical communications, and free-form optics. The purpose of this institutional focus issue is to provide a glimpse into the research depth and breadth of Optical Engineering at Tianjin University.

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journal. The standard Applied Optics Publication Charges will apply to all published articles. Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Applied Optics and submit through Optica Publishing Group's electronic submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the feature issue on Tianjin University.
