Abstract
Jorgenson and co-workers have reported the use of capillary zone electrophoresis for high-resolution separation of proteins and small molecules. The technique has been shown to provide separation efficiencies of more than 100,000 theoretical plates per meter. Achievement of this efficiency requires use of capillaries with diameters of 75 μm or less. The narrow bore is required to make heat transfer to the capillary walls sufficiently efficient to keep the electrolyte at constant temperature. The narrow bore generates problems, both in sample introduction and in detection.
