Abstract
The analysis of aluminum alloys by spectro-chemical methods presents a very formidable set of obstacles, varying from a wide boiling point range to unusual affinities for oxygen. Despite these conditions the high inductance system has performed very satisfactorily for a number of years. However, there are certain applications to which a high inductance system is not particularly suited. One of these phases is the problem of furnace control, particularly for the small smelter or secondary producer. Current scarcity of aluminum scrap necessitates purchase of unclassified materials. When this mixed scrap is melted down, the preliminary sample is very often a composition which virtually defies the spectrographer to foretell the correct standard to place on his plate or even to have a comparable standard.
