Scientific research often builds upon or revises previous studies, but failing to cite or recycling previous work is a form of academic misconduct and can lead to manuscript rejection, retraction, or disciplinary action. To avoid publishing plagiarized works in their journals, it is becoming increasingly common for journals (including Optica Publishing Group journals) to use plagiarism detection tools, such as Similarity Check, on submitted manuscripts.
