Feature Issue of Biomedical Optics Express

Optical Manipulation and Its Applications 2023

Submission Opens:1 April 2023

Submission Deadline: 1 September 2023

Biomedical Optics Express welcomes submissions to a feature issue in conjunction with the Optical Manipulation and Its Applications (OMA) topical meeting being held on 24-27 April 2023 as part of Optica’s Biophotonics Congress in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Whereas meeting participants are particularly encouraged to submit their work, this feature issue is open to all contributions in related areas.

This feature issue will cover the range of optical manipulation technologies currently being developed for studies in biophysics; single molecule, single cell and tissue level analysis; optical manipulation of chemical processes in organisms; lab-on-a-chip development; optomechanical cooling; and environmental monitoring. The feature issue will also consider theoretical work such as developments in light scattering calculations for optical trapping. Techniques to be highlighted in the feature issue include optical tweezers and alternative trapping and manipulation methodologies that find application in biosciences, for example fiber optic tweezers, plasmonic optical tweezers, holographic trapping, optical traps with spectroscopy, and alternative techniques such as acoustic traps.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Optical manipulation in biophysics and biomedicine
  • Plasmonic optical tweezers, fiber optical tweezers, holographic optical tweezers
  • Optical manipulation with spectroscopic techniques
  • Photophoresis
  • Optofluidics/microfluidics
  • Acoustic trapping
  • Optical trap modelling, theoretical underpinnings
  • Machine learning as applied to optical manipulation

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journal. The standard Biomedical Optics Express Article Processing Charges will apply to all published articles. To be eligible for publication, an expanded conference paper needs to add value to the original conference proceedings and the conference paper number must be included in a cover letter or as a note in the submission form. Please see Optica Publishing Group's guidelines on expanded conference papers for details.

Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Biomedical Optics Express and submit through the Prism submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the feature issue on Optical Manipulation and Its Applications 2023.
