Abstract
A novel method, local primary desaturation (LPD),
was proposed to suppress color breakup for field-sequential color
(FSC) LCDs. The LPD method was implemented on a 32-inch
OCB-mode color filterless FSC-LCD with 35 x 19 individually
controllable RGB-LED backlight segments. The performance of
the method was evaluated via color breakup simulations and with
a perception test. We also evaluated the image quality and the
amount of power savings. The results showed that the LPD method
reduced the color breakup from very annoying to almost imperceptible
while maintaining a good image quality and reducing the
power consumption significantly.
