Decoupling of Uplink User and HARQ Response Signals to Relax the Latency Requirement for Bridged Fronthaul Networks

Abstract

Mobile fronthaul (MFH) networking has been widely studied to construct the MFH link cost-effectively. However, the MFH link has a strict latency requirement. Moreover, the burst signals are simultaneously generated since the mobile base stations (MBSs) are time-synchronized among the neighboring MBSs. That is, the number of accommodatable MBSs will be limited even though the MFH link will be networked. To increase the MBSs in the MFH network, the latency requirement needs to be relaxed. The latency requirement is determined by a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) process. In the HARQ process, an acknowledge (ACK) or negative-ACK signal must be forwarded through the MFH link with low latency. A main user data signal does not need to be forwarded with low latency when a time-division duplex scheme is applied to the MBS. Therefore, this paper proposes a signal-forwarding scheme for decoupling the uplink user and HARQ response signals. The proposed scheme can be applied to a system in which HARQ is used—for example, 4G [long-term-evolution (LTE), LTE-Advanced], or next-generation 5G mobile communication systems. The decoupled HARQ response signal is forwarded as the highest priority. Numerical simulation shows the feasibility of the proposed scheme.
