A Double-Beam, Percent Transmission Recording Infra-Red Spectrophotometer

Abstract

A spectrophotometer for the infra-red is described which consists of an external photometering system adapted to an ordinary rocksalt prism spectrometer equipped with a fast responding bolometer. Two radiation beams from the same source are made to fall alternately (at 6 cycles per sec.) upon the slit of the spectrometer while a variable diaphragm automatically balances one of the beams against the other. Electronic amplification and pen-type recording are employed to register the spectra, which appear directly as percent of radiation transmitted. Differential comparison of two samples, one placed in each beam, is an important capability of the instrument. When impure and pure samples are thus compared the spectrophotometer automatically records the spectrum of the impurity only. Similarly in the case of solution and solvent the spectrum of solute only is recorded. Recordings showing the performance of the apparatus are reproduced.
