Method of Computing Correction Plate for Schmidt System for Near Projection, with Special Reference to System for Television Projection

Abstract

The image formed on the cathode-ray tube face in television is projected upon a near screen by an optical system, which is an extension of the classic Schmidt camera, consisting of a large aperture spherical mirror and a plano-aspherical correcting plate at the center of curvature of the mirror. The aspherical surface is the last surface of the system and is so shaped that the center of the field is completely freed from spherical aberration for some wavelength. A method of computing the aspherical surface in this or a similar system is described. A method of determining the chromatic aberration due to the plate and of selecting the constants of the system so that the plate assumes a form of minimum chromatic error is described. The computation of the sin condition of the system is described and also the trace, in the tangential plane, of rays from off-axis portions of the field from which the nature of the off-axis imagery is deduced as well as the curvature of the tube face required to produce a flat image on the screen. Ray trace formulas through the aspherical surface only are given. The trace of rays reflected or refracted at spherical surfaces is assumed to be accomplished by conventional methods.
