The Ultimate Limits of Sensitivity of Lead Sulfide and Telluride Photo-Conductive Detectors

Abstract

Calculations are carried out for the theoretical limits of sensitivity of lead salt photo-conductive cells, on the basis of fluctuations in the room temperature radiation quanta falling on the cell. The results show a marked dependence on the temperature of the layer, and on the form of the spectral sensitivity curve.

Using cooled detectors exposed to room temperature radiation, it should be possible to detect 8×10−14 watt at 2.9μ with PbS, and 9×10−13 watt at 5.0μ with PbTe.
