Abstract
In order to study the interference colors of thin layers on glass surfaces more thoroughly, the authors have extended the study reported in the former paper to the cases of oblique incidence and of multilayers. In Sections 1 to 3, the color of a thin layer illuminated by obliquely incident light is shown by curves on an I.C.I. chromaticity diagram. On the basis of these results, the method of coating the layer with a thickness of λ0/2 or λ0/4 with great precision is discussed in Sec. 4. The colors of multilayers for perpendicular incidence are plotted on the I.C.I. diagram in Sec. 5. A rule found empirically by Banning concerning the color of multilayers is proved true in Sec. 6 so long as the thickness of each layer is nearly λ/4, or its integral multiples. The I.C.I. illuminant C is used throughout the paper.
