The Determination of the Intensities of Raman Lines

Abstract

Existing methods for the quantitative evaluation of Raman line intensities are briefly reviewed and attention is called to the desirability of obtaining intensity data which permit comparisons between laboratories using different apparatus. A simple method for obtaining such data is described, using the 459 cm−1 Raman line of CCl4 as a reference and eliminating the properties of the spectrometer and detector by a calibration with the radiation from an incandescent lamp which was standardized as Illuminant A by the National Bureau of Standards. The calibration is tested by calculating the intensity ratios of Stokes to anti-Stokes lines and also the ratios of pairs of Raman lines when excited by two mercury lines. Consistency with theory is found which indicates that the method of calibration is satisfactory.
