Multiple Monochromators. IV. A Triple Monochromator and Its Application to Near Infrared, Visible, and Ultraviolet Spectroscopy

Abstract

The method described previously has been used to convert a conventional monochromator to a triple monochromator, and spectra in the near infrared, visible, and ultraviolet have been recorded to illustrate the performance of the instrument in these regions. A limitation to the use of this method for measuring visible and ultraviolet absorption spectra is the noise caused by the relatively large intensity of unmodulated light of unwanted orders falling on the photomultiplier at the same time as the third-order modulated radiation which it is desired to record. Various ways are suggested for overcoming this difficulty.
