Goniometric Spectrometer for the Measurement of Diffuse Reflectance and Transmittance of Skin in the Infrared Spectral Region

Abstract

An instrument is described for the study of diffuse reflectance and transmittance at various wavelengths in the visible and infrared spectral regions. The apparatus consists essentially of a monochrometer and a goniometer arranged in such a way that the material to be studied is illuminated with monochromatic light and the diffuse reflected and transmitted energy is measured by scanning the goniometer about the sample. The advantages of the instrument are (a) absolute measurements of total reflectance and transmittance are obtained; and (b) the angular distribution of the scattering of the reflected and transmitted energy are determined.
