Separation of Incident and Emitted Radiations in a Solar Furnace by Means of Rotating Sectors

Abstract

An image of the sun was formed on a sample by means of a paraboloidal mirror. The sample was heated to a desired temperature adjusting the effective aperture of the mirror. A cylindrical shutter traveling along the optical axis of the mirror was used. The temperature of the sample was measured with an optical pyrometer. Radiation incident on the sample was shut off while measuring its brightness temperature by means of sectors rotating at about 2500 revolutions per minute. One sector of special shape was located near the sample and another sector near the telescopic system. Calibration and use of the sectors for solar furnaces equipped with mirrors of maximum apertures 60 in. and 120 inches and focal lengths 26 in. and 34 in. are discussed.
