Abstract

This spectrometer permits the measurement of spectra in the region of one to twenty microns. The instrument is evacuable and self-recording. A potassium bromide prism and three permanently installed gratings are employed for standard operation. Prism spectral records are obtained by rotation of the prism only, with a mirror or a grating, which serves as a reflection filter, positioned for specular reflection. A very short time is required for the convenient, semiautomatic change of mode of operation from the recording of prism spectra to that of obtaining grating spectra. During the measurement of grating spectra, the prism, serving as the monochromator, is rotated continuously in suitable spectral synchronization with each respective grating by means of a special cam; this eliminates the usual frequent resetting of the prism. Reliance for accurate wavelength indication is placed upon a specially made fine worm gear, with mechanical amplification to revolution counters, rather than upon a graduated circle. Selsyn mechanisms are utilized throughout for the rotation of the prism and the gratings, the recorder chart drive, the adjustment of slits, and the selection of shutter materials. The resulting centralization and simplification of controls permits rapid and convenient scheduled operation of the spectrometer at high or low dispersion as desired. A new and simpler form of the carbon rod infrared source is described. Satisfactory resolving power is attained with this instrument.
