Diffraction Grating Study: Derivation and Experimental Verification of the Cause of Tilted Spectral Images

Abstract

A theoretical analysis has been made of a diffraction grating defect in which the ruled lines are fanned out uniformly and appear to intersect at a common point in space. The resulting phenomenon, a tilting of the spectral image, is formulated and experimentally verified. The theory further predicts a loss of resolving power under certain conditions, and it is suggested that this may be the cause of heretofore inexplicable losses in resolving power for otherwise perfect gratings.
