Photographic Resolving Power and Aberrations of Lenses

Abstract

The performance and aberrations of three aircraft camera lenses, all of about 20-in. focal length and f/6.3 aperture were measured. The performance was assessed in terms of low-contrast photographic resolving power, and the wave front and transverse ray aberrations were determined interferometrically. The interferometer used was a variation of the Twyman and Green instrument, in which the plane of focus for resolving power test and the center of curvature of the reference sphere for interferometry were directly relatable.
