Abstract
The ultimate limitations to the performance of a bolometer made from a classical metal are discussed and an expression derived for the noise equivalent power input of such an instrument operated under optimum conditions. This is found to be twice the value for a perfect thermal detector working at the same temperature.
Details of the construction and performance of some bolometers made from thin platinum strip are given, the bolometers being operated both at room temperature and under cooled conditions.
