Abstract
Linear electro-optic effects have been studied with dc voltages at 5461 Å in seven crystals belonging to classes 32, 6, 3m, and . The results are as follows: r11 = 0.263±0.013× 10−12 m/V for potassium dithionate, r11 = 1.0±0.2×10−12 m/V for cesium tartrate, r11 = 0.10±0.01×10−12 m/V for glucose NaBr monohydrate, r11 less than 0.03×10−12 m/V for strontium dithionate tetrahydrate, |r13−r33| = 1.6±0.16×10−12 m/V for LiKSO4, r22 less than 0.02×10−12 m/V for NaLiSO4, and r41 = 0.8±0.1×10−12 m/V for hexamethylenetetramine. Using the Poincaré sphere method, general equations have been derived for the effect of a simultaneously birefringent and optically active crystal on elliptically polarized light.
