Diffraction by Rotating, Rectangular Apertures in Astigmatic Systems

Abstract

The diffraction pattern of a rectangular aperture oriented arbitrarily with respect to a specific meridional plane is described for an astigmatic system. For the slit in rotation about the optical axis, the observation point is taken as stationary, first with respect to a reference system rotating synchronously with the aperture, and then with respect to a space-fixed coordinate system. Continuous slit rotation produces, in both cases, oscillatory intensity changes at the observation point. The means for obtaining accumulated intensity values, as observed in practice, are presented. Advantages of the continuously rotating slit over the stationary, rectangular aperture are noted.
