Validation of an Indicator of Mammalian Retinal Receptor Response: Absolute Threshold

Abstract

Images were formed on the retinas of living albino rats. The retinas were then removed and incubated in one of two media. The amount of light necessary to just induce a previously reported staining reaction was determined. This reaction is being evaluated as an indicator of individual retinal receptor response. A 5-min exposure to light at wavelength 500 mμ was employed. 7.0% and 11.4% bleaching of rhodopsin were estimated necessary in order to induce a threshold stain in the receptor ellipsoids following incubation in the respective media. Thus, most of the photosensitive pigment remains intact at the stain threshold. This characteristic should prove to be valuable in future studies.
