Abstract

The color of polychromatic light transmitted through the Sénarmont compensator has been calculated as a function of the analyzer angle and the retardation of the sample. For the case of the zirconium arc source and a compensator quarter-wave plate for 546 mμ, a theoretical curve was obtained which gives the retardation of the sample in terms of the analyzer angle at which a blue-to-purplish-blue color change takes place. This curve is found to be in agreement with some experimental results.
