Abstract

Reflection of visible light by interference films of MgF2 vapor-deposited onto vitreous substrates was studied by immersion spectrophotometry and a comparison of the measured refractive index was made with the angular reflectance determination. With a film freshly prepared on annealed vitreous substrates the two results are in good agreement. A change in the anneal of the substrate or in the deposition conditions does not alter the refractive index of the film although the reflected intensities do vary. With aging, unannealed films develop an optical anomaly which is equivalent to the conversion of a very thin superficial layer to higher refractive index. The sensitivity of reflectance by interference layers to inhomogeneity was found to be enhanced by immersion.
