Optics of Circular Tubes Used for Plasma Confinement

Abstract

The radiance distribution of a circularly symmetric plasma is shown to be free of distortion when viewed at right angles to the axis of a transparent cylindrical enclosure. The enclosure may consist of a number of concentric media of differing refractive index and, provided the system remains transparent, may be arbitrarily thick. The image radiance distribution may however be selectively attenuated if either the plasma itself, or the enclosure, absorb part of the light flux. Relations are given connecting the object and image distributions under these conditions.
