Abstract

We have determined the passive and dynamic absorption coefficients at 1.06 μ, corresponding respectively to the unpumped and pumped configurations, for laser rods of a particular, popular, barium crown-glass composition. We have obtained output data in the long-pulse mode for six rods of the same nominal composition, each characterized in terms of the passive coefficient, with values spanning 0.0020–0.0082 cm−1 at 1.06 μ, and have by three different treatments, using the laser-output data, arrived at values for the dynamic coefficient at 1.06 μ. Values obtained from the three different treatments are in reasonable agreement and support, within experimental uncertainty, the assumptions necessary under our experimental circumstances. Actual values for the dynamic coefficient are in the range 0.002–0.015 cm−1.
