Abstract

The validity of a two-band Drude model for analysis of the optical properties of 14 transition metals in the 6–20-µ infrared region is investigated. Optimum values for the model parameters are obtained from the available experimental data, by a least-squares minimization method. Although good model fits are obtained for the dielectric constants of the transition metals considered, the model parameters are not always unique. This is due primarily to the limited wavelength range. One-band fits for some of the metals were also obtained but, in all instances except one, the two-band-model fits gave much better agreement with experiment. A listing of the one- and two-band-model parameters is given, as well as the experimental and model curves for the dielectric constants.
