Photoelectron Count Distributions Due to Periodic Irradiance Modulation

Abstract

The effects of periodically modulating the irradiance of an amplitude-stabilized light beam is discussed in terms of the probability distribution, Pn(T), for the number of ejected photoelectrons in time T. After some general considerations concerning the mean and variance for arbitrary periodic modulation, attention is given to the evaluation of Pn(T) for sine- and square-wave modulation. Curves showing the behavior of Pn(T) as a function of the modulation and counting times are included, together with some general remarks concerning the conditions under which we may expect departure from Poisson statistics.
