Abstract

The propagation of electromagnetic waves along the z axis in a radially inhomogeneous medium described by = 02(z2 is studied. The analysis assumes that 2(z) is constant over a certain interval of length and that there is no correlation of the values of 2(z) in two intervals. The dependence of the focusing properties of the medium on the correlation length and on the standard deviation in 2(z) have been investigated. The relevance of these investigations to the gas lens and GRIN (Selfoc) fibers is pointed out.
