Abstract

Guided waves in an axially symmetric inhomogeneous medium with parabolic index variation are treated. The vector wave equation in the medium of infinite extent is solved strictly by the perturbation method, and the effect of the gradient of the index is evaluated. Then the guided waves along a graded-index dielectric rod are treated and the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are obtained.
