Abstract

Some modes of a hexagonal array of parallel identical circular lossless dielectric rods are discussed. The electromagnetic boundary-value problem is solved by use of an expansion of the mode field in circular harmonics. The relation with the guided modes of the single isolated rod is investigated. An approximate result for the lowest-order mode is compared with a result of coupled-mode theory. An estimate of the spread of light in the outer-segment layer of the human retina is derived.
