Abstract
The far-infrared transmittance spectra of Tb, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb orthoferrite at 4.2 K are presented. Trivalent rare-earth ionic transitions are observed as follows: (1) Tb—none, (2) Ho—86.6, 121.6, 127.8, 132.6 cm−1, (3) Er—46.5, 106.5, 109.5 cm−1, (4) Tm—33.3, 41.6, 58.3, 66.0, 106.5 cm−1, (5) Yb—none. In all five samples, there are two lattice-resonance lines near 102 and 112 cm−1. In Yb orthoferrite, two weak lines, believed to be due to magnetic resonance, are seen. Only the Er orthoferrite spectrum is affected by a 50 kOe applied magnetic field.
