Detectability of a luminance increment: Effect of superimposed random luminance fluctuation

Abstract

Detectability, d′, of foveal luminance increments obscured by luminance noise was tested in human observers. For low noise, d′ was constant. For high noise, d′ decreased more rapidly than would be predicted for the ideal observer. An ideal observer degraded by internal noise and uncertainty would match this behavior.
