Abstract
A short history of the development, after the early work by Rubens and collaborators, of grating spectroscopy in the far infrared begins with Czerny in 1925 and continues to the introduction of commercial instruments in about 1960. The spectral range was gradually extended to 1 mm wavelength, the resolution was increased primarily through the development of better detectors, and the ease of operation in the region was facilitated by modern electronics and sensitive recorders.
