Abstract
The time variation of the concentration of helium metastable atoms in He-Kr+ discharge has been measured by the reabsorption method. The concentration of He(2s 3S) metastable atoms increases in the early afterglow and reaches the maximum about 2 μs after the termination of the pulse. The concentration of He(2s 3S) metastable atoms is greater at the optimum pressure for the laser output power than at other investigated pressures. The concentration of He(2s 1S) metastable atoms is smaller than that of He(2s 3S) metastable atoms by the factor of about 3 to 4 during the pulse and by the factor of about 7 to 8 in the early afterglow.
