Abstract

The fidelity and efficiency of reproduction for a finite subject beam with a plane wave front and Gaussian amplitude distribution are investigated for variable grating thickness, modulation depth, and various ratios of aperture width to Gaussian half width. It is found that there exist two major effects which cause distortion during reconstruction and that, when the reference beam has a plane amplitude profile, high efficiencies and high fidelities cannot, in general, be simultaneously achieved.
