Abstract
A general expression is obtained for the maximum radiant power density at the receiver of a general optical concentrator in terms of the acceptance function and the input distribution of radiation. As an example of the result, the radiant power density for two- and three-dimensional symmetric and asymmetric ideal concentrators is found without reference to any particular concentrator design. For particular input distributions both two- and three-dimensional ideal asymmetric concentrators have greater power density than their symmetric counterparts.
